Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the implications of complex adaptive systems theory for health care.
  2. Critically appraise current thinking and published research concerning the interaction of multiple pathologies.
  3. Evaluate the impact and interaction of psychosocial variables on the disease process, advancing critiques and alternative hypotheses as appropriate.
  4. Exercise complex problem solving skills as they assess patients presenting with multiple pathologies and/or complicating psychosocial factors.
  5. Demonstrate originality in problem solving to determine the impact of complicating factors upon the patient’s plan of care.

Course summary

Complex adaptive systems theory (CAST), nonlinear dynamic systems stochastic and deterministic chaos. The implications of these approaches for health and health care in terms of both the individual and care system. . Interacting multiple pathology in different diseases e.g. diabetes, COPD and heart failure. The interaction of developmental and psychosocial factors with pathology.
