You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), 08 January 2014 and 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014 and 25 March 2014. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

What can this course lead to?This module can be taken on a stand-alone basis or as part of the MSc/PgD/C Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care award. It can also be incorporated into the MSc/PgD/C Practice Development programme.

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteriaTo be eligible to study this module, you must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment. When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award. Participation in the formative components of the module is required in order to pass the module.

Intended Learning OutcomesOn successful completion, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a coherent, comprehensive understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to enable effective leadership and management of a contemporary health care workforce.
- Conceptualise and synthesise strategies involved in empowering and motivating individuals and teams in health care settings and the barriers - both perceived and real - that may prevent this.
- Demonstrate conceptual knowledge and critical application of techniques to manage, promote and enhance individual and team performance and development in order to ensure a quality service.
- Critically reflect on the manager's role in relation to monitoring of quality, standards and risk and apply this in the context of your own role and field of practice.
- Undertake an in depth critical reflection of your own management knowledge, skills and behaviours in relation to managing at a strategic and organisational level - and engage in critical self appraisal and reflection in order to demonstrate how you intend to address individual development needs and enhance your effectiveness.
The indicative module content includes negotiation; motivating and influencing others; self motivation and resilience; assertive communication; conflict resolution; self awareness; emotional intelligence; working within your sphere of influence; team development - empowerment; monitoring of standards, quality and risk; performance management; staff development and the appraisal/PDR process; partnership working; organisational development and the manager's role and responsibilities.
