This course focuses on Windermere’s catchment. This is the area around Windermere where water naturally drains into the lake. It encompasses Grasmere, Esthwaite, the Langdale and Troutbeck valleys and the surrounding fells.

You will develop the skills necessary to resolve land and water resource management issues in the Windermere catchment in a sustainable way.

Particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • The effects of complex land use management
  • Legal ramifications of integrated catchment management
  • Resolving conflict between different stakeholders and their varied management objectives.

This course is delivered in a one week block in June 2014.

This course is ideal if you work with or volunteer for one of the many organisations which actively work to improve the Windermere catchment. The issues you learn about are also applicable in many other catchment areas.

This course can also count towards your achievement of the Postgraduate Certificate in Greening Outdoor Practice.

Resources and facilities

We will based in the heart of the Windermere catchment, using the classrooms at University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus.

Each day will start in the classroom, but after the first day you will be out and about getting to grips with the issues at first hand.

Applicants should hold a first degree or relevant work/volunteer experience.

Course summary

This course develops the skills necessary to resolve land and water resource management issues in upland catchments in a sustainable way. Particular emphasis will be placed on reconciling conflict between different stakeholders and their varied management objectives.

On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • apply a comprehensive understanding to the operation of catchment systems: river channel processes, fluvial hydrosystems, river corridor habitats etc.
  • critically appraise the effects of complex land use management: user groups, impacts and ameliorative / mitigative management, local communities, holistic management approaches.
  • critically discuss the legal ramifications: EU Water Framework Directive; Soil, Air and Water Pollution regulations; polluter pays principle; ownership and access.
  • develop conflict management solutions through working with stakeholders, developing partnerships, knowledge transfer, public meetings, empowerment and taking ownership of the problem.
  • design sustainable integrated management solutions for catchments.
