Course delivery dates

The PgD commences at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster campus, in September each year.

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), 08 January 2014 and 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014 and 25 March 2014. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

The PgD Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care is a masters level programme for individuals working within health and social care settings who are managing, leading, supervising (or aspiring to do so) at a strategic level within their organisation. The programme aims to enable participants focus on their actual (or potential) work setting and upon conceptualising of underpinning theories and principles with management and leadership practices in their own work setting.

What can this course lead to?

You can top-up your PgD to MSc Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care, with the completion of a 60 credit dissertation.

Selection criteria

It is envisaged that students accessing this programme will be managers or team leaders within health and social care, and will therefore come to the programme with experience and expertise in their field. It is hoped this experience will contribute to the process of learning and enhance the learning experience.

  • HLLG7052 Management: Managing Information for Organisational Effectiveness (20 credits at level 7)
  • HLLG7011-14 Negotiated Learning (Management) (20 credits at level 7)
  • HLLG7006 Health Leadership (20 credits at level 7)
  • FHWG7000 Research Methods (20 credits at level 7)
Course summary The overall aims of the programme are to:
  1. Provide a distinctive postgraduate programme that welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds and recognises and values prior experience and learning.
  2. Provide students with opportunities to critically review, consolidate and extend an advanced body of knowledge, and application of a range of management and leadership theories and skills in order to enhance the service provided to their users
  3. Facilitate the development of learners as change agents and leaders of change in order to drive service development in response to challenging and complex health and social care environments
  4. Provide learners with the opportunity to enhance intellectual, analytical and problems solving skills which encourage the advancement of mature and independent decision making and judgement
  5. Build on graduate key skills which enhance scholarship within the lifelong learning context
  6. Provide a learning experience which promotes the application of a robust client/user focus and a collaborative approach to both learning and practice
