Why study with us?

This course will provide a deep knowledge of the process surrounding technical and operational developments in e-commerce. Areas of study include e-commerce environment, trends and developments in e-commerce initiatives, marketing, supply chain management, strategy and planning.

The four-year, sandwich-route mode of study gives you the opportunity to undertake a one-year placement between year two and three of the programme. This will allow you to enhance and apply your knowledge in real world contexts.

All our awards utilise the beauty and rural environment of Cumbria to provide you with unique experiences.

Full-time students

The tuition fee for the 2013/14 academic year has been set at £8,250 (including an automatic £750 fee discount).

As a full-time UK student, you are entitled to a tuition fee loan which doesn’t have to be repaid until you start earning £21,000 per annum (if you're from England) or £15,795 (if you're from Scotland). You may also be eligible for a maintenance loan (up to £5,500) and a maintenance grant (up to £3,354). For more information about student loans and grants, visit our student finance page.

National Scholarship Programme

The National Scholarship Programme is designed to support students with a household income of less than £25,000. Full-time students may be eligible for one of 110 NSP awards for full-time students worth up to £6,000.

Cumbria Bursary

The Cumbria Bursary is an annual cash award of £1,000 for up to three years of study. There are 300 Cumbria Bursaries available in 2013.

Access to financial support doesn’t end at registration. We have several awards and support funds available to our current students, including:

International

The tuition fee for the 2013/14 academic year is £9,960.

Fees are billed annually and may be paid by the student or a sponsor. 75 percent of the annual tuition fees must be paid before or at registration. For students requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa, a deposit of £3,500 is expected as a minimum before a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) will be issued. Early payment discount

If you are paying your own fees, you may be eligible for an early payment discount of £1,000. This discount is awarded to students who pay in full before registration.

International scholarship

If you are studying a full-time bachelor's degree (excluding teacher training and NHS-funded courses) or a top-up degree, you may be eligible for an international scholarship. The university has nine scholarships available. Find out more on our scholarships page.

Additional financial support

Our money doctors will be on hand throughout the year to help you manage your money while you’re in the UK. However, if you do happen to run into financial difficulty during your time here, you may be able to access a small emergency support fund.

Modules Year 1
  • UCBS4001 - Contemporary Business Management and Organisation

    The aim of this module is to illustrate how contemporary management has been developed through a study of classic management theory and practice. It considers changes to contemporary management and organisations including the adoption of ethical and moral practices and corporate social responsibility.

    The module introduces the notion of management and leadership and the continuum needed in responding to different organisational situations. In addition the module explores the differences and similarities between entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship and how these concepts are applied in local, regional, national, international and global companies.
  • UCBS4002 - An Introduction to Marketing in the 21st Century

    The aim of the module is to introduce you to the theories and concepts of marketing and consider the impact, ethics and sustainablity agendas to which it contributes in the 21st Century, particularly in regard to 'technology revolution'.

  • UCBS4003 - Business Research and Practice

    This module aims to introduce management research related to a variety of business contexts and using different approaches. This will include the identification and understanding of how information and knowledge are generated and applied, the preparation and planning of research, data collection from a wide range of sources of data, data analysis and dissemination of results.

  • UCBS4004 - Essentials of Human Resources

    This module introduces you to the human resource function and enables an understanding of its importance within organisational contexts. You will learn how to compile a systematic recruitment and selection process. The module also considers the human resource function in terms of management and leadership.

  • UCBS4005 - Principles of Business Finance and Economics

    The module aims to introduce you to fundamental economic theories and the role of individual businesses to economic success.

  • UCBS4006 - Business Sectors

    The aim of this module is to provide you with a broad knowledge of business; its scope, nature, types, management functions, leadership, range and challenges. The module will introduce different sectors of industry, functions of management and leadership through a range of guest speakers. The roles and responsibilites of different levels of organisation will be considered through the exploration of job roles and descriptions as well as a contemporary view of how the wider environment impacts on business success.

    Business is considered in its widest definitions with consideration of sustainability in both urban and rural enviroments. The module will challenge you to consider how sustainability impacts on business decision making in terms of location and growth using a variety of case studies to support learning and maintain a balance between historical and contemporary perspectives.

  • UCBS5001 - Applied Research and Analysis

    The aim of this module is to enable you to successfully develop research proposals and undertake research projects. The module will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate an evaluative ability to be creative and innovative in operational decision making using a range of data.

  • UCBS5002 - Human Resource Management and Development

    This module also aims to introduce you to the study and practice of Human Resource Development and its importance within organisations looking at different approaches to individual, team and organisational learning and development utilising best practice examples across a broad range of organisations and contexts.

  • UCBS5003 - Management Accounting and Decision Making

    The aim of this module is to give you the knowledge and evaluative ability to be creative and innovative in your operational decision making using a range of decision making models, processes and opportunities. In addition you will learn how knowledge and application of financial data is used to assist the decision making process and reflect on adaptations of this knowledge to work in industry.

  • UCBS5004 - Marketing and Consumer Behaviour

    This module aims to look at the changing nature of consumers together with the socioeconomic factors affecting them. The module provides you with the ability to provide creative and innovative marketing solutions for a range of private, public and third sector organisations in a range of geographic locations.

  • UCBS5013 - Principles of E Business
    (Optional module)

    The module aims to give a comprehensive coverage of emerging online technologies and their influence on the electronic business marketplace. It seeks to balance the understanding of enabling technology with the strategic and operational business aspects of successful e-business systems. It evaluates the ways in which e-business technologies can be applied to achieve new business development and process improvements, and reflects on how business and society are responding to those changes.

  • UCBS5014 - Retail Enterprise and Operations

    The aim of this module is to provide you with the basic principles and main theories of retailing noting the growth and change exacerbated by a global marketplace. The scope of retail operations is evaluated and analysed together with technological change and the impact of e-commerce.

Sandwich placement
  • UCBS5016 - The University of Cumbria Business School Sandwich Placement

    The aim of the year long sandwich placement is to develop your skills and aptitude in a work context. You will also develop skills in reflexive learning, team cohesion and employment technologies.

Year 3
  • UCBS6001 - The Independent Project

    The module aim is for you to be able to initiate, plan, research, sustain and evaluate an extended piece of independent intellectual work based on individual initiative and pathway of study.

  • UCBS6002 - Strategic Leadership, Innovation and Change Management

    The aim of this module is to develop a critical and synthetic understanding of a broad range of contemporary strategic leadership, management and organisational knowledge, and apply them to develop consistently competitive organisational strategies for an organisation operating in a globalised business environment.

  • UCBS6013 - Retail Management and Globalisation

    This module will critically evaluate the key drivers of change to future retail developments. You will consider the impact of the political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal developments on strategic, operational and unit level retail management.

    You will review the developments in the internationalisation of retail brands, multi-channel operations and supply chain management. You will also consider the dual requirements for increasing corporate social responsibility and profitability. The module will also assess the future of globalisation and retailing.

  • UCBS6014 - E-Commerce in Practice
    (Optional module)

    This module aims to give you a critical and analytical understanding of e-commerce systems and how they impact on modern businesses. The module adopts a strategic approach, but also covers technological, sustainable, ethical and legal implications. The module provides a creative opportunity for you to gain experience utilising live systems technologies.

  • UCBS6015 - Technology Enabled Consumer Relationship Management
    (Optional module)

    The aim of this module is that you critically evaluate a range of Consumer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and analyse how CRM technology can deliver value to organizations. This implies a critical understanding of how CRM systems are used to interact with customers and the resultant impact on other organisational disciplines and functions, such as marketing, sales, IT, change management, customer service, accounting and/or strategic management.

Course summary

This award enables you to critically evaluate the relationships between international business strategy and operational needs providing creative and innovative solutions through the key essential attributes of management and leadership.

Furthermore it allows you to foster awareness of the different applications of computational thinking technologies and methods of enabling information and service delivery to an organisation and its customers.
