Lancaster - 01, 08, 15, 22 and 29 October, 05 and 12 November 2013; 10:00 - 16:00 hours

Distance Learning - start date, 01 October 2013

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), 08 January 2014 and 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014 and 25 March 2014. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteria

You need to be a Health care professional with a relevant recordable qualification e.g RGN, Paramedic, Pharmacist.

You are required to identify a facilitator in practice to oversee your achievement of competence (you will need to complete a Learning Environment Pre-course Assessment Tool (LEPAT) as part of the admissions procedure for this module). Your facilitator needs to be a doctor or a nurse practitioner with two years experience, and will need to commit to one hour per week. You need a minimum of 3 hours practice time per week.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the fundamental professional and legal issues which underpin the expansion of professional roles in the health care setting
  • Demonstrate and evaluate the application of a structured comprehensive history taking process within a consultation
  • Broadly evaluate a range of problem solving skills in health assessment
  • Discuss the application of physical examination techniques
  • Discuss the application of effective communication strategies to facilitate a therapeutic relationship with the patient
