  • Critically appraise the process for administering chemotherapy, including consent, health and safety, methods of administration, prevention of complications
  • Discuss the recognition and management of complications of chemotherapy
  • Review the normal cell cycle and discuss the action of common chemotherapy agents

Summative assessment: 3,000 word equivqlent written assignment

Formative assessment: 1,500 word equivalent tutor-led activity (participation in the formative components of the module is required to pass the module).

Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteria

Students wishing to undertake this module must be working in the chemotherapy setting and have their administration skills assessed within their employing organisation.

To be eligible to study this module, students must demonstrate the ability to study at degree level and commit to attempting the assessment. When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award.

Modules HLLG6007 Chemotherapy - 20 credits at level 6 Course summary

Indicative module content comprises that recommended by the North of England Cancer Network (January 2012) including:

Cell mitosis and how chemotherapy affects the cell cycle, informed consent, rationale for chemotherapy - treatment intent, classification of chemotherapy agents, pre chemotherapy assessment, normal and abnormal blood parameters, side effects of chemotherapy and their management, oncology emergencies, recognising and managing neutropenia, cytotoxic spillage, health and safety, extravasation, local, network and national policies, written information/information prescriptions, holistic needs assessment, clinical trials, transportation of chemotherapy, management of cytotoxic waste, methods of administrating chemotherapy, telephone triage of complications of chemotherapy, risk management of patients on oral chemo, professional, legal and ethical issues, fertility options, recognition and management of hypersensitivities, angiogenesis.
