What you will study

This course introduces you to the different internal and external elements of a business, helping you to understand the context in which a business operates. It explores common aims and characteristics of business and what makes them different. Business structures, cultures and functions are identified and the political, social, economic, technological and ethical considerations affecting business are introduced.

The course consists of five study books:

  • What is a business?
  • An introduction to human resource management in business
  • An introduction to accounting and finance in business
  • An introduction to marketing in business
  • Different ways of looking at business.

Together with learning resources accessed through the website, these bring together all the various functional elements in an analysis of a business case study.

Key learning outcomes of this course include:

  • improving your awareness of business issues
  • developing the necessary skills for studying at more advanced university levels.

The Open University Business School is one of the few institutions worldwide that are triple-accredited by EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA. These are internationally recognised quality standards which independently validate the quality of the Schools teaching, research and operations. This course typically takes 6 months to complete based on a regular study of 12 - 16 hours per week.

Entry requirements

This is a key introductory Level 1 course. It is for anyone with an interest in business. You do not need to have any work or management experience, previous educational qualifications or technical knowledge.

As this course is a broad introduction to the study of business studies and to The Open University we do not assume that you have prior knowledge or education in this subject area.

You will need good computing skills. For example, you should be able to search the Web, use email, use word processing packages and take part in online forums.

You will also need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.5. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.

Computing requirements

You will need a computer with internet access to study this course which includes online activities. Your PC or laptop will require Windows software produced after 2006. If you have an Apple Mac or Linux computer – you will need Windows on it using Boot Camp or a similar dual-boot system.

You will also need a headset, with a microphone and earphones, to talk to your tutor and other students online during some of the course activities.

Qualifications

Level 1 courses provide core subject knowledge and study skills needed for both higher education and distance learning, to help you progress to courses at Level 2. By the end of An introduction to business studies (B120) you will be expected to be working successfully at the level required of first-year undergraduate students.
