The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These regulations apply to all workplaces including those with five or less employees and to the self-employed.

This includes whether or how many trained first aiders are needed,
what should be included in a first aid box and if a first aid room
is required.
The paediatric first aid course is aimed at those who look after
babies and children, i.e. schools, nurseries, childminders. Ofsted
recommend anyone looking after young children should have a minimum
of 12 hours first aid training.
At the end of the course candidates will be able to recognise and
treat any of the following conditions with children and babies:
- Resuscitation of babies and children
- Shock
- Anaphylactic shock
- Bleeding
- Choking
- Asthma
- Fractures, sprains and strains
- Head and spinal injuries
- Foreign bodies
- Bites and stings
- Extreme heat and cold
- Febrile convulsions
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries
- Poisons
