Every week around 20 tradesmen die from asbestos related diseases and many buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000 still contain asbestos often in places where you would not expect. The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) make it a legal requirement to ensure that any staff who are likely to encounter or deal with asbestos containing products as part of their work receive asbestos awareness training so that they understand the hazard and how to deal with it.

- what methods and equipment to use
- how to choose, use and look after personal protective
equipment
- recognising and dealing with other dangers, such as work at
height
- decontamination of yourself and work areas and waste disposal
- emergency procedures
The approved code of practice identifies many of the trades whose
workers should undertake this type of training: general maintenance
staff, plumbers, gas fitters, electricians, joiners, plasterers,
heating and ventilation engineers, construction workers, roofers,
painters and decorators, shop fitters, demolition and construction
workers, computer/telecommunication engineers, installers of
alarms, architects, building surveyors, team leaders and
supervisors etc.
