Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at learners who want to pursue a career as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise, and have a passion for health and fitness. Candidates will develop the necessary skills and knowledge required to enable them to plan and instruct safe and effective programmes of exercise. This course will give you a qualification that is highly recognised within the fitness industry and by employers, as a key measure of achievement. The CYQ qualification is a vocationally related qualification (VRQ) at Level 2 on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). It also provides access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 2.

What will I do on the course?

Learners will cover:

  • Anatomy and physiology including:- the heart and circulatory system- the respiratory system- structure and function of the skeleton- musculoskeletal system- postural and core stability- the nervous and energy systems and their relation to exercise
  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating
  • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme
  • The skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme with apparently healthy adults - both individuals and groups. This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups also covered are older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients provided the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed

What qualifications do I need?

This course is suitable for candidates who have experience either in participating or teaching fitness. You should have experience in using gym equipment and have an active interest in the fitness industry.

You must be aged 18 or over before the start of the course and meet one of the following criteria; Four GCSEs grade D or above or for mature candidates appropriate work experience/sporting background.

20 weeks, one day a week (all day Wednesdays)

What does it cost?

As part of the fee you will receive manuals for the theory and practical elements of the course.



What could I do after completing the course?

Upon successful completion of the course you will be eligible to seek employment as a fully qualified fitness instructor in the private and public sectors. It will also give you the pre-requisite to undertake a level 3 qualification in personal training.

How will I be assessed?

You will undertake two multiple choice theory papers, complete worksheets as well as formative and summative practical assessments.

What equipment will I need?

You will need basic gym kit in order to perform practical work as well as pen, paper and folder to create a portfolio of evidence during the course.

Are there any additional costs?

There are supplementary resources available from the governing body if you wish to purchase them, none of which are mandatory.
