This Video Streaming short course at Southampton Solent University gives you the opportunity to advance your knowledge and develop skills in streaming media and on-demand video technologies for both web and mobile devices. It is designed for professional media practitioners (web masters, designers, developers, video-journalists and film/television production staff) who have a good knowledge of how networks function and who need to extend their skills to the web platform.

Digital convergence is bringing about the integration of various traditional mass media, advanced by technological and economic forces. At the same time, the tools which we use to access media content are constantly evolving and media content is now circulated across different media systems simultaneously. This move, from medium-specific content to content that flows across multiple media channels is the defining element of convergence.

As a result, web video skills are very much in demand, as many working professionals do not have the skills to create media rich sites. This short course addresses that skills gap.

Course content

The course examines how the internet, the spread of broadband and ever-increasing download speeds have impacted traditional media such as newspapers, television and radio. This element of the course will be delivered online via articles, reading materials and audio/video interviews with industry practitioners. You will be supported through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which you can access on and off campus at any time.

The more practical section of the course considers the technical aspects of video on-demand and video streaming technologies. You will create a live web-cast using the University’s media server and produce an on-demand video which you then encode, embed in a web page and upload to a mobile device such as an iPhone or iPod touch.

You will have access to Windows and Flash Media Servers as well as the University’s large IT suite, offering 20 iMac workstations loaded with industry-standard software.

Assessment

You will be guided through a series of demonstration-led workshops. These will introduce concepts and skills. The workshops will culminate in a technology test that demonstrates in-depth knowledge and comprehension of streaming and on-demand video on web and mobile platforms.

You will be also required to collate a portfolio which will include a critical reflection of the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course. It will evidence your ability to assess and evaluate the range of technologies and platforms available against the needs and constraints of the client. This will be supplemented by three written and illustrated ‘How To’ guides where you are required to propose a technical solution appropriate to your own workplace. This will require you to synthesise a practical solution from a variety of options and technical constraints.

You will be required to complete the tasks during the on-campus workshop days.

Special features

It is proposed that industry experts from Adobe and the BBC will participate in a seminar session to give an insight into the BBC’s multi-platform delivery workflow. The seminar may be conducted online via a 'webinar'.
