Over the last decade, the role of fashion stylist has emerged as pivotal in keeping pace with change and interpreting a complex visual language for a range of markets and sophisticated consumers. This highly specialised course is industry-focused and places emphasis on simulating processes found in high-level creative management environments, such as magazine, media, event production, e-commerce and PR arenas.

In addition to concept development, you will learn how to oversee and manage collaborations with a wide range of individuals who are involved in the creative process. With the advent of ‘fashion film’ and fashion-related moving images, you will move beyond 2D image-making andexplore multidisciplinary platforms: films, fashion films, music videos,
live events, catwalk shows, social and viral media.

The focus on multidisciplinary exploration and collaboration is particularly attractive to industry.

The mix of topics develops your critical awareness of the industry and produces graduates who design creative trends and transgress established boundaries.

Industrial focus

You are encouraged to seek relevant work experience through our industry links, and the academic team has a strong portfolio of industry contacts and international experience. The focus of this MA is on employability, as it provides several opportunities to network, establish contacts and work in professional roles.

Course content

Research Methods: You will explore the principles of academic research, the variety of research methods available and their relevance in relation to your study path. Providing background knowledge for the final major project or dissertation, theunit will guide you in selecting appropriate and ethically managed research methods so that you develop your confidence and independent research skills.

Concept Development: This unit focuses on developing the wide range of conceptual skills necessary to effectively communicate using visual media with a wide consumer audience. You will be working on set briefs, creating the foundations for powerful, visually stimulating and meaningful images which draw on a wide range of social, cultural, political and economic reference points.

Creative Direction: The role of the creative director is to oversee the creative process from start to finish. This unit enhances your understanding of how each element in the creation of fashion imagery fits together to present something that is visually stunning and economically successful. Industry awareness, communication, management and negotiation skills are of paramount importance.

Professional Contexts and Practice: This multidisciplinary unit explores current debates, emerging areas of research and professional practice within fashion. A diverse programme of guest lectures, including representatives from the fashion and creative industries, provides a critical awareness of the cultural and professional contexts associated with your chosen field. Strengthening your knowledge of the fashion and creative industries, the unit supports the development of the necessary skills for preparing a specific career plan.

Major Project: Negotiated with teaching staff, your project will culminate in a significant creative solution, resulting in a portfolio, book, magazine, film, editorial spread or website. This unit aims to launch your career in your chosen industry.

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment methods: portfolio, essay, film, proposal, presentation, exhibition review, research and development, major project and reflective report.

Projects/work experience

You will be encouraged to gain relevant work experience as part of the course and we will support you in your quest for a placement at a magazine, fashion brand, PR and ad agency, TV and film production company, image consultancy or photography studio.
