This course is aimed at students from a variety of engineering backgrounds, both electrical/electronics, manufacturing and mechanical. It will develop their practical and analytical skills in engineering and includes a mix of taught theory, practical work and experiments.

The first year introduces subjects such as the mathematics required for engineering principles, training in microcomputer systems and manufacturing concepts. Key professional skills are also included to prepare students for the business environment. The final year project is based on the student’s own interests and often involves exploration of an industrial problem. |

Industrial focus

Several units require students to look at industry-related problems and incorporate live briefs into the assessment. Many students work closely with employers or local companies on projects within the course. Students often produce high quality work which benefits both the student and employer. Students are encouraged to participate in practical work-based initiatives and the Institution of Engineering and Technology regularly holds local events.

Assessment

Written assignments, end-of-year exams and interim phase tests. Practical work is assessed by laboratory reports or log books.

Projects/work experience

Units such as manufacturing concepts include mini-group project work and other units require small groups for laboratory experiments. The project is an individual project based on the student’s industrial or academic background.
