Politics, Presidency and Society in the USA 1968-2001

You will study:
The social and economic position of black citizens in the USA in the 1940's and 50's
Discrimination and segregation in the USA in the period
Martin Luther King and peaceful protest
The Black Power movement
The situation of ethnic minorities in the USA in the 1960's

The Presidencies from 1968 to 2001
Social issues in the period
Popular culture
Reagan and the New Right and free market ideas

Unit 2: Britain c.1860-1930: The Changing Position of Women and the Suffrage Question
The changing personal status of women
Women's changing role within the political system
The attitudes of politicians, Parliament and the public to the suffrage question
Changing educational and workplace opportunities for women and girls

Unit 3 : From Kaiser to Fuhrer - Germany 1900-1945
The Second Reich 1900-1919
The democratic experimen

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language.

Costs

Visits to Berlin are optional and do have a cost for students. The recent visit to Berlin in April 2011 cost students £360 in total*.

Progression

History is a well respected subject for most university courses and many of our students progress to university degree courses in history or as joint degrees with another subject. The high level skills of analysis and evaluation you will have developed are greatly valued by employers today; in many professional careers and disciplines (particulars including history, journalism, archaeology, law, business, teaching, management, librarianship and information science.)
