This practical course will improve your understanding of the beauty and effectiveness of well-considered typography, and an appreciation of how it is a powerful design and communication tool for the 21st Century.

You will refresh your knowledge of the basic elements and techniques that go towards effective and creative typographic communication using both analogue and digital mediums. You will also learn about typographic management and manipulation skills, as well as gain an understanding of the richness and diversity of typographic communication, its historical context and its contemporary application

Led by a typographic designer with extensive professional experience, the course will explore the evolution of type from its very beginnings. You will gain an appreciation of visual language and appropriate typographic tone of voice, and develop strategies for working with different kinds of text - using typography in isolation and as a component of layout and composition. The course will be a combination of theoretical and practical content, with workshop and project based sessions combining theoretical discussion and critiques with practical application.

This course is suitable for those wishing to enhance their commercial design career or build a new portfolio, and those who would simply like to gain a fuller appreciation of type. It is aimed at anyone with an interest in type and who would like to know more and explore its creative possibilities. Ideally you will have studied graphic design before (whether at college or one of our beginners or intermediate graphic design courses) or have some relevant professional experience.
