Taught alongside the MA Interior Architecture and Design and MSc / MA Smart Design, this multi-disciplinary framework provides you with the opportunity to become a design, technology and/or management innovator and autonomous problem solver, combining practical skills with awareness of aesthetics, practical applications and function.

Course focus

Using the latest CAD, Building Information Modelling, visualisation and simulation software, you will explore the potential for managing the building design process to satisfy current political aspirations and constraints. Your study can relate to new buildings or to the regeneration or refurbishment of existing buildings.

What will I study?

Weeks 1 – 15 (Certificate phase)

  • Research Methods for Architectural Technology and Design (20 credit points)
  • Horizon Scanning for Architectural Technology and Design (20 credit points)
  • Design Communication Architectural Technology and Design (20 credit points)

Weeks 16 - 30 (Diploma phase)

  • Group Design Projects for Designed Environment (20 credit points)
  • Full-time only: Applied Design and Research for Designed Environment (20 credit points)
  • Part-time only: Work-Based Learning (20 credit points)
  • Design Futures for Designed Environment (20 credit points)

Weeks 31 – 45 (Masters phase)

Major Study Project for Designed Environment (60 credit points)

Within these modules you can focus on industry specific specialisms. These specialisms include:

  • Materials Science
  • Environmental Performance
  • Building Information Modelling

There is also the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with students on other courses within the School.

Skills audit and Learning pathway agreement

Prior to starting on the course we will undertake a skills audit which will appraise levels of understanding and knowledge in the context of the course and will help direct specialisms and inform individual learning pathway agreements.

The learning pathway agreement summarises and directs the outcomes of your major study project. This agreement defines the bespoke nature of your learning giving you the ability to work to individual strengths.

How will I learn?

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, critiques, case studies, workshops, site visits and field trips.

Project work will be individual and group based.

There will be input from external professional organisations to bring you into contact with specific up to date, high quality expertise.

In addition to the delivery of design, management and technical knowledge, the programme also pays special attention to developing your key skills in independent learning and research.

How will I be assessed?

The ethos of combining theory and practice is strongly reflected in the nature of assessments.

All are coursework based, requiring students to undertake practical work together with research and critical evaluation to demonstrate the link between theory and practice.

A wide range of other assessment techniques incorporating technical reports, case studies and group projects, individual and group presentations are used where appropriate.

  • Modules can also be studied as Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
