Mathematics for Engineering 2 (SQA HN Unit DG4L 34)
This Unit has been designed to allow you to develop your
knowledge, understanding and skills in mathematics which underpin
so much of more advanced studies in mathematics for engineering
students. If you have studied some (or all) of these subjects
before, the early parts of this Unit will provide you with an
opportunity to revise the techniques you have learned in previous
courses.
By the end of this Unit you will be expected to apply calculus to
solve problems which are found in different areas of
engineering.
In Outcome 1 you will establish the techniques of differentiation
and integration used in most branches of engineering to underpin
the opportunity for further studies in engineering.…

In Outcome 1 you will establish the techniques of differentiation
and integration used in most branches of engineering to underpin
the opportunity for further studies in engineering. A computer
algebra may also be used to extend these techniques to more
advanced functions which go beyond these basic functions (eg
functions which involve products quotients, chain rule, etc).
In Outcome 2 you will study the application of differentiation and
integration techniques to engineering problems. These techniques
can be further extended, with the use of a computer algebra, to
more advanced engineering applications.
Credit points and level: 1 HN credit at SCQF level 7: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7).
This is a self study course which means you can study at home, workplace or wherever you choose at times that are convenient for you. You do not have any classes to attend.
The materials for this course are provided as web-pages for you to work through online. As you progress through the course materials you will find written explanations of each feature, followed by practical exercises.
You will be supported throughout the course by a specialist Distance Learning Tutor. Your tutor will contact you (via your College email account) within 7-10 working days of receiving your welcome letter and materials. As you progress they will continue to make regular contact to offer support and guidance, usually by e-mail but sometimes by phone, to ensure you are making good progress and to support your learning throughout. Please note that you must be able to study independently through the course materials.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The assessment for the two Outcomes in this Unit are combined together into one assessment paper. This paper should be taken by candidates at one single assessment event, which should last one hour and thirty minutes. The assessment paper is carried out under supervised, controlled conditions. A pass mark of 60% is recommended for this paper.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have a basic knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and theorems. This may be evidenced by possession of National Certificate Unit Core Mathematics 4 or SCE Standard Grade Mathematics at 1 or 2, or an equivalent level of experience.
