Is it for me?

This course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs and is aimed at students with a keen interest in business who enjoy coursework. All assessment is by coursework (there are no exams) and all units must be passed to get a minimum of pass grade for the whole course. The final grading is Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

What’s involved?

Business Purposes

This looks at the features, characteristic and purposes of businesses. We also look at what the government wants from business and what it does to encourage business.

Business Organisations

This unit is an investigation of the functions of businesses and their short and long term aims.

Financial Forecasting for Business

This unit looks at the costs and revenues of a business, its break-even and cash-flow forecast.

Bookkeeping for Business

This unit looks at the paperwork used by firms to record payments and receipts. From these documents, you will draw up a simple Income Statement and Balance Sheet. We also investigate how bookkeeping can reduce the risk of fraud for a business.

The Marketing Plan

In this unit, you will go through the process of setting up a business based on your own ideas. You will investigate the possible demand for your business and then determine how your product or service will be marketed.

Business Online

Linked to the Marketing Plan, you will investigate what makes a good business website and then design one for your ‘own’ business.

People in Organisations

This unit looks at job roles and functions within organisations and the paperwork involved in recruiting staff. You will then do a careers action plan for yourself.

Training and Employment in Business

This unit looks at the importance of training to improve the performance of a business and the motivation of the staff. We also consider the value of teamwork and how staff can be motivated through appraisal.

Personal Selling in Business and Customer Relations in Business

These two units will be based on real-life sales and service scenarios with a local business organisation. We will look at the role of sales staff and the importance of excellent customer service.

Entry Requirements:

This course is aimed at students who have a keen interest in business. Normally you will have 3 GCSEs or equivalent at grade D & E plus Maths and English grades D (or working towards improving as part of your programme of study. Students without these grades may be accepted onto the course after an interview with the Course Leader.

Which courses go well with this?

Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and/or English.

Progression:

Students achieving a Merit or Distinction grade will be able to progress to Advanced level courses. This course also develops skills and understanding relevant to a very wide range of employment opportunities.
