About Lean Six Sigma

Lean Six Sigma is the combination of Lean Management and Six Sigma. Lean is the principle that focuses on the elimination of waste from processes. From the point of view of the customer, only the process activities (both internal and external) valuable to the customer are carried out. Lean originated at Toyota in the 1950’s, and it was known within the company as Toyota Production Systems (TPS). It was renamed Lean Management in the 1980’s by Womack & Jones.

Six Sigma is the other part of Lean Six Sigma. Six Sigma focuses on quality and on the elimination of variation from processes. It aims towards keeping the outcome of processes as consistent as possible. For instance, if the dimensions of a certain part display more than a specific amount of variance, the final product gets rejected. The same applies to service organisations. Applications for insurance policies or permits may never take longer than a specific amount of time. Six Sigma is about the statistical identification of the source of specific variances and the elimination of the causes of such variances. Six Sigma was introduced by Motorola. This company realised that a small number of semi-manufacturing faults resulted in a large percentage of failures when it came to its final products. Later, Six Sigma was expanded by Jack Welch from General Electric.

The combination of Lean and Six Sigma is ideal because it makes the numerical identification of the source of waste possible.
