A practical course enabling you to carry out maintenance and basic repairs on your bike so that it is safe and easy to ride.

Learner & Entry Requirement: 

No prior knowledge required.

General & First Session: 

Please wear clothing suitable for working on bicycles.  Please bring the cycle you wish to use if available and any accompanying tools.  KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the class is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective: 

To enable you to keep your cycle in safe and efficient working order.  By the end of the course you should be able to check your bike for roadworthiness, mend a puncture, adjust gears, adjust brakes, change brake blo…

Assessment: 

No formal assessment.  Learning is assessed by the confidence and effectiveness with which learners perform maintenance tasks and understand and uphold good health & safety practices.

Progression: 

Higher level maintenance courses run by training bodies related to ATC or CTUK for example.

Course Syllabus:

  • Elicit any particular maintenance concerns, requirements and experience
  • Regular checks and preventive maintenance
  • Checking and repairing tyres and punctures
  • Checking and adjusting brakes and replacing brake blocks
  • Checking, adjusting and repairing gears, chains, transmission and brakes
  • Checking and repairing wheels and bearings
  • Other checks and preventive maintenance
