Description

Please complete the attached "Health and Fitness Questionnaire" and inform your tutor verbally if you have any health concerns.  Please bring the completed questionnaire to your first class.  You are asked to complete this questionnaire once a year.

Using stretches and toning exercises from Pilates, Yoga and dance genres, this class effectively stretches and strengthens your body and leaves you relaxed and invigorated.

Learner & Entry Requirements: 

Suitable for all abilities.  No experience required.

General & First Session: 

Comfortable clothes which are easy to move around in.  Bottle of water, towel.

Course Aim & Objective: 

To improve learners' posture, stance, flexibility, core strength and to tone all body parts.

See and feel an improvement in flexibility and muscle tone.

Feel more confident and relaxed.  Feel stronger and have better posture.

Assessment: 

The tutor assesses learning by constant observation and grading at the beginning of the course and throughout.

Progression: 

To be discussed during course.

Course Syllabus: 

Introductions, question and answer to ascertain ability, any injuries or illnesses and discuss the aims and goals of the participants.  Posture assessment and guidance to correct stance.  Listed are examples of the exercise and movements to be performed throughout the course.  All have alternative options for less or more able participants.

Basic warm-up: 

Head movement, shoulder rolls, arm circles, torso twists, hip rotation, plies, calf raises, knee lift and side lunges.

Stretches standing: 

Side stretch with lunge, hamstring, quadriceps, triceps, shoulders, chest and trapezius.

Strengthening exercises standing: 

Core activations, front and side develops, lunges, plies, controlled leg swings side and forward, calf raises and instep stretch.

Strengthening exercises seated: 

Roll down into press up and reverse roll, plank and side plank combinations, hip raise with arm circles, seated roll up and reverse roll, hip rotations and controlled leg raises, kneeling gluteal raises, with arm extension, shoulder lifts and back raises.

Stretches seated: 

Quadriceps and hamstring stretch, back stretch, abdominal stretch, cat stretch, bridge, seated side reach, abductor and abductor seated, side reach with wide legs.

Relaxation: 

At the end of the session we take time to concentrate on breathing and relaxation.  Calming music and low lighting create a calming and de-stressing environment, encouraging participants to relax and unwind.  Followed with a re-introduction to the room and slowly raising to standing before a final stretch and deep breathe.

End of class: 

Discussion of class, feedback, praise and encouragement.
