The course covers all aspects of clothes making.  Learn the techniques of clothes making and soft tailoring for a professional finish. You will be given advice on choosing patterns and fabrics, how to obtain a good fit and shown the techniques necessary to complete a variety of garments.

General & First Session: 

Beginners should wait for instruction and guidance on choosing equipment, patterns and fabrics, a list of equipment is given in the first class.  If you already have any of the following items please bring them, but do not purchase any specifically for the course until after the first class.  Improvers could bring fabric, a pattern and basic sewing equipment (scissors pins, needles etc.).  Pen and paper, tape measure.  KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective: 

To teach the techniques and processes of clothes-making to enable you to produce a variety of garments to a high standard.  By the end of the course, you should be able to: choose suitable patterns and fabric; cut out and mark fabric; tack a garment for fitting; make up garments using pattern instructions; press and finish garments to a high standard, taking account of fitting garments to individual size.

Assessment: 

Work is individually assessed by the tutor and is continuous.  Homework is optional.  The garments give sufficient indication of learning achieved and level of practical skill acquired.  Skills learnt can be repeated from garment to garment and augmented.

Course Syllabus: 

  • The course will cover everything necessary to enable you to complete a variety of garments.
  • Learn to choose suitable patterns for figure types and select the correct fabric for the chosen pattern style
  • Learn all techniques and processes necessary to complete garments
  • Learn to use the sewing machine with confidence.
  • Choose what garments you wish to make
  • Encouraged to start with something easy and then progress to more advanced garments and techniques
