Having invested in your dslr camera come and find out how to make the most of this expensive investment.  All the buttons will be explained and all the myths dispelled.  Course includes one visit to a working photographer's studio.  Suits self-motivated learners, with some skills and knowledge of basic camera handling skills.  Must be familiar with own camera manual and have basic skills in transferring the images on to a computer .

KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Entry requirement:

Own digital camera SLR and some experience of using it. Be familiar with own camera manual. Ability to download images to computer.

What you will need for your first session:

Digital SLR camera. Pen and paper.

Overall course aims and objectives:

At the end of the course the learner should be able to:

  • Use the camera with greater confidence and operate a SLR camera in programme and manual modes.
  • Raise visual awareness and a better understanding of photography now and its creative potential.
  • Produce well-composed pictures of a range of subjects which reflect their own individual character and needs.
  • Develop a long term pleasure for the medium and its potential for a life-long learning.

On this course you will develop the following skills:

  • Ability to creatively use shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
  • Composition skills
  • Editing your work

Assessment – (homework, on line tests, and/or exams):

Work shot on location shoots will be looked at and discussed together with feedback given. 

Tutor – visual and verbal

We will recognise and record your progress and achievement through attainment of the following goals.

  • Understand main camera controls & functions and apply them to produce the right results
  • Understand & apply camera exposure & metering modes to achieve creative results
  • Understand and apply the basics of good composition.
  • Understand the different types of digital files, how to manage them and how to present their work to best effect.
  • Understand and apply the appropriate visual risk assessments and the Health & Safety skills and knowledge required to carry out activities related to this course.
  • Your own negotiated aims and objectives.
