Using still life, the studio environment and other references, this course combines the time-honoured study of linear and tonal relationships with an investigation of the inspiring variety of media available today, including pencil, pastels, charcoal, crayons, pen and ink and brushes.
Additional costs may be incurred for the materials and life/costume model to be arranged after discussion.
Learner & Entry Requirements:
No previous experience necessary, just a willingness to investigate. You will be expected to provide your own materials and these are often available as single pieces rather than sets.

General & First Session:
Please bring to the first lesson and old shirt to protect clothes, an A3 sketchbook of cartridge paper and HB, 2B, 6B pencils. Please do not purchase these specifically for the first lesson as KAE is unable to offer refunds for materials, books or equipment if the course is subsequently closed.
Course Aim & Objective:
This course is intended to introduce learners to a variety of methods and media for drawing and top help learners develop skills which will enable them to make choices about the way they express themselves.
By the end of the course each learner will have gained experience of a variety of media and supports and sharpened his/her perceptual skills to improve figurative drawing which will help with choices about a more personal form of expression.
Assessment:
You will learn through demonstration, group and individual instruction and personal experiment. Each session will conclude with a brief discussion and individual peer assessment.
Progression:
As this is a mixed ability class progression can be within the class or other art classes with KAE.
Course Syllabus:
Based largely on direct observation, you will be encouraged to;-
- Gain inspiration form a variety of subject matter including natural and organic form, landscape, man-made objects, the studio environment, printed references and the human form.
- Sharpen perceptual skills through different approaches to drawing.
- Experiment with pencil, charcoal, conte, crayons, pen and ink and brushes on a variety of supports, exploring a variety of techniques through which to express yourself.
- Investigate line, tone, form, balance and proportion.
- Look at methods employed by other artists.
- Record your findings and experiments in a sketchbook.
