Learner & Entry Requirements:
Learners should have some basic technical playing ability (able to find and play notes) and the willingness to 'have a go'.

General & First Session:
If you already have your own instrument and amplifier (if necessary), please bring them, but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class. KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective:
To enable learners to develop their skills and knowledge, help build their confidence in order to improvise as part of a group of musicians.

By the end of the course learners should be able to enrol for the Blues into Jazz continuing course and play in a band.

Assessment:
Observation, feedback, Question & Answer sessions.

Progression:The Blues into Jazz Continuation course Level 2. Please ask at the centre office for details.

Course Syllabus: Throughout the course, learners are encouraged to play together, leading, supporting, and developing an awareness of communication within a group of musicians. Essential scales and chords, how and when to apply them and exploring options over chord changes. All expressions and musicians' jargon are fully explained. Learners become familiar with several tunes and are encouraged to play from memory. The tunes are divided into a series of short phrases with learners playing alternately. 'The Blues' are applied to the tunes selected and are a constant theme throughout this course.

On this course you will gain the following skills and knowkledge:

  • The ability to improvise with other musicians
  • Awareness of how scales relate to chords
  • Recognition of chord sequences
  • A basic understanding of the blues
