Many websites draw their information from a database. This makes them much easier to update, as anyone can fill in forms to update the database and it will immediately be available on the site, without any web design knowledge. The use of a database for the backend of a site also makes it much easier to add a really powerful search facility, customise the site for particular users (e.g. showing items based on their previous visits or allowing them to add comments), add shopping cart functionality to turn the site into a shop, and much more.
