This course provides the knowledge and skills needed by the modern farm worker who may be aspiring to supervisory responsibility. It will develop key practical skills. All learners considering this course are encouraged to contact the course tutor to discuss the programme. Learners have the option to undertake the Level 3 Diploma qualification which will involve workplace assessments, or the College Certificate which will not.

Course Content

This is a 27 day course taught over 8 months and covers:

  • Dairy, beef, sheep and pigs
  • Livestock production: breeding, parturition, raising youngstock, feeding, housing, production systems, grassland management, health, waste management
  • Crop production: Crop husbandry, cultivation, establishment, growth, harvesting and storage
  • Mechanisation: Getting the most out of modern farm machinery
  • Keeping the necessary records and meeting legislative requirements

The course includes considerable practical skills development, including training towards the NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines.

Entry Requirements

Normally Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture / NVQ 2 or equivalent qualification.
