PURPOSEThe Joint MA in European History is designed to provide a
programme of study for ambitious students who intend to pursue
advanced study or aim for an internationally mobile career
trajectory. The programme offers students thorough training in
European history in comparative and global perspective, supported
by a wide range of relevant modules offered by King�s and
European partner universities.
DESCRIPTIONThis two-year full-time MA programme is an innovative
international programme offered by King’s in collaboration with a
consortium of renowned universities located in European capital
cities. The programme enables students to study abroad at one or
two of the partner universities in their second and/or third
semester. This is the first MA programme in history to bring
together a truly multinational, Europe-wide collaboration of
high-profile partner universities. Partners include the Humboldt
University Berlin, University College Dublin and the University of
Rome Tor Vergata.
The programme reflects the most recent developments in the writing
of European history. Students will study the social, political and
economic history of Europe and Europe’s cultural, religious and
intellectual life. Further, students will have the opportunity to
investigate the history of violence and conflicts, colonialism and
post-colonialism, nation building, international and transnational
relationships and migration.
Semester One:
At King’s, students participate in a core introductory module, and
optional modules taught at the internationally acclaimed History
Department. Students prepare for their semester(s) abroad through
support by a personal tutor and a specifically tailored
departmental workshop. Students can also draw on excellent
workshops and briefings offered by experienced staff at the Study
Abroad Office and are encouraged to engage with the large and
vibrant international community at King’s.
Semesters two and/or three:
During the mobility phase, students will spend one or two semesters
abroad at one or two of the partner universities. Core teaching is
offered in English at all partner universities; in addition
students may take suitable modules offered in the local language of
instruction.
Semester four:
Students pursue their dissertation at King’s working one-on-one
with an academic supervisor. A faculty member from one of the
partner universities may act as second supervisor.
Study in LondonStudents will find rich and inspiring
research material in London’s many significant research libraries,
archives and museums. International research collections are within
a few hours’ travel. London also has the advantage of a strong
graduate community, where students can follow up a range of
interests towards further research. Students are strongly
encouraged to participate in the seminars at the Institute of
Historical Research (IHR), many of which are convened by members of
the Department.
Careers
The Joint MA in European History is aptly suited for students
interested in pursuing an internationally mobile career. The degree
cultivates research, writing, and analytical skills that can be
applied to a broad range of careers, e.g. in education, journalism,
finance, governance and the cultural sector. It is also offers an
excellent grounding for students interested in going on to a PhD in
History or adjacent disciplines.
