We place an important emphasis on cultural knowledge and broader aspects of language learning, including issues related to bilingual learners and English as an additional language (EAL), integrated with other areas such as information and communications technology (ICT) and digital, video and multimedia production. We have well-established partnerships with cultural and educational institutions across London, as well as European universities and teacher training institutions. The PGCE is informed by research carried out by our tutors in a variety of areas.
During your teaching experience, you will normally teach pupils aged 11 to 16. Where possible, we also arrange visits to schools with students aged 16 to 18, and include information on policy and practice pertinent to post-16 teaching.
We offer the following pathways in the languages cluster:
European languages
You will specialise in French, German or Spanish, and undertake subsidiary study and school experience in French, German, Spanish or Italian.European languages with EAL or less widely taught languages
You will specialise in French, German or Spanish, and undertake subsidiary study and school experience in either English as an Additional Language (EAL) or the teaching of a less widely taught language or a non-Roman script language such as Arabic, Russian, Greek, Japanese or Mandarin Chinese.Mandarin Chinese with a European language or EAL
You will specialise in Mandarin Chinese and undertake subsidiary study and school experience in either French, Spanish or German or in EAL.Features
This programme has been designed to enable all students to demonstrate that they have met the standards across Key Stages 3 and 4 (11–16 age range Qualified Teacher Status).
Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for trainees to gain experience at Key Stage 5 (post-16 age range), even where their qualification is for 11 to 16 teaching.
Attendance
In your placement schools or colleges, your responsibilities will be equivalent to those of a practising teacher, but on a reduced timetable. The working day starts at approximately 8.30am and ends at 5.00pm. Sometimes it is shorter, but you will need to plan your life to reflect the demands of the school day and the school term dates, which may not be the same as the published IOE term dates.
Days spent at the Institute include keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days. In addition, time in the evenings and at weekends is needed for further study and planning.
Assessment
You will be assessed in two ways:
- on your practical teaching and your progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status
- on assignments, portfolio tasks and, for some subjects, practical projects.
We will monitor your progress throughout the PGCE, and you will record this in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of a portfolio that links into the induction year (your first year of teaching) and your continuing professional development.
Subject entry requirements
You should have a good first degree, and should normally have spent a significant amount of time in a country where the foreign language you would like to teach is spoken. We place great importance on your spoken and written fluency, and you will be asked to demonstrate this in your interview.
For the European languages pathway, all candidates must have French at A level or the equivalent. For the European languages with EAL or less widely taught languages pathway, it is also desirable for you to have knowledge of French. Unless you have very recent experience of languages teaching and learning in UK schools, you should carry out a visit to a languages department in a secondary school, ideally for five days. You should be prepared to talk about this at your interview.
Where do our students go?
Languages PGCE graduates are currently working as:
- languages teachers in UK schools and internationally
- head of department in UK schools
- director of a European international school.
