Masters Level Module
The module on Collecting Data builds on the theme that decisions in research, at both the data collection and analysis stage, are shaped by the research questions/focus. It provides training in a range of approaches to the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data. In addition to gaining experience of and a facility with these approaches, students consider issues common to these modes of data collection and evaluate the relative strengths and limitations of the various approaches. It provides training in a range of approaches to the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data. In addition to gaining experience of and a facility with these approaches, students consider issues common to these modes of data collection and evaluate the relative strengths and limitations of the various approaches. All elements of this module are compulsory. The module addresses covers the following knowledge, skills and competencies: questionnaire design and use; test and structured interview design; life history and non-directive interviewing methods; participant and non-participant observation; ethnographic fieldwork techniques; the collection of historical, documentary and visual data; sampling; interpretation of measurement error; the use of the Internet and secondary data; techniques for recording, managing and presenting qualitative data; the strengths and weaknesses of data, including consideration of the social, cultural and economic locations of respondents. Learning Outcomes The completion of this module enables you to demonstrate your capacity to: understand and apply a range of research methods and tools; carry out data collection and analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, fore-grounding the importance of the research question or model in this process; work collaboratively with other researchers and practitioners evaluate critically published research.
