The programme leading to the award of Associate of the Institute of Education provides an opportunity for experienced teachers, administrators and others working in the educational service to carry out, under the direction of a tutor, an investigation of a selected topic in the field of education.
Programmes are arranged individually and may include attendance at selected lecture or seminar courses taken from our doctoral programmes or other programmes of study offered at the Institute, as well as reading, fieldwork, visits and conferences. You will be assigned to a tutor who will assist you with your research. Subject to your tutor's approval, you may spend one term abroad on fieldwork.

Features
It is possible for students who have undertaken a period of study on a doctoral programme at the Institute to transfer their registration to Associate with the approval of their supervisor. Further information is available from the Doctoral School.
How are you assessed?
Your programme of work will lead to the preparation of a report of 30,000 words, on which you will be formally assessed for the award. The report should include a statement of your reading and fieldwork, a critical survey of your field of study, and the conclusions that you have drawn. Full-time students should normally submit the report within 15 months of the last day of the programme; part-time students should submit the report within 30 months.
Attendance
You may start at the beginning of any term, in October, January or April.
Entry requirements
You should normally have had at least five years' experience in relevant work in education and have proven ability to carry out the advanced studies which the programme will require.
