  • The course prepares practitioners for advanced clinical roles in a range of areas of healthcare practice by enabling them to develop skills in clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment, clinical judgment and decision-making and research
  • You have the option to undertake Independent/ Supplementary Prescribing for Nurses and Pharmacists (V300) or Supplementary Prescribing for Allied Health Professionals, successful completion of which will allow you to record that qualification with your regulatory body
  • If you already hold a prescribing qualification you may be able to gain credit for your prior learning
  • If your career development does not require you to complete a full Masters programme, you may exit with the clinically focused Postgraduate Certificate or the broader clinical leadership focus of the Postgraduate Diploma

Successfully complete the course and you’ll be able toapply for advanced clinical posts in a range of areas of practice. You’ll also be able to improve your performance in the role in which you are already working.

Course content

The overall aim of the Masters award is to enable experienced professionals:

  • To develop a systematic and critical knowledge and understanding of their specialist field of practice
  • to develop a critical awareness of current problems, gaining new insights at the forefront of their area of advanced or palliative care practice that enable further strategic development of practice and practice knowledge
  • To enable practitioners to inform, enhance and develop their competency within their field of practice
  • To demonstrate advanced scholarship in their subject area through the planning and execution of Level 7 enquiry

The programme structure is based upon a 50% theory and 50% practice divide in programme hours. This is on the understanding that the student will spend 600 hours over Part 1 of the programme learning in their work setting. Leading Advanced Care Management is delivered over three semesters to enable practitioners to maximise opportunities for critical reflection and work-based learning.

Course modules

Core programme modules include:

  • Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis and Holistic Care Management
  • Leading Advanced Care Management
  • Policy and Practice in Advanced Health Promotion
  • Research Methods in Health and Social Care
  • Dissertation

Up to 40 credits may be selected from option modules:

  • Palliative Care: Symptom Management (20 credits)
  • Negotiated Module at level 6 or 7 (20 credits)
  • Independent or Supplementary Prescribing (40 credits)
  • Psychosocial Support in Palliative Care (20 credits)
  • Ethics of Decision-Making in Palliative Care (20 credits)
  • Mentoring and Empowering (20 credits)
  • Narratives: Theory and Method (20 credits)

Entry requirements

To be accepted onto this programme you must:

  • Hold current registration with a professional, statutory regulatory body relating to your area of advanced practice
  • Hold a degree, of 2:2 classification or above, in a discipline related to your professional qualification or hold a non-graduate qualification which the University has deemed to be of a satisfactory standard for the purposeof postgraduate admission. Candidates without a full honours degree at 2:2 or above will be asked to complete a 1500 word essay.
  • Have a minimum of three years full-time (or equivalent pro rata) post-registration clinical experience and be employed in a clinical role with a high level of autonomy or have employer support to secure a placement with protected time equivalent to the above for a minimum of two days per week
  • For the Clinical Assessment and Prescribing modules you must have a Designated Supervisory Medical Practitioner (DSMP)/ Medical Supervisor and clinical mentorship support from your employing organisation
  • Following completion of an application form you will be invited to attend an interview with the admissions team.
