Key facts

  • All courses have a practice-based or practice-related element which aids learning and develops your skills in real situations
  • You will be taught by experienced healthcare practitioner lecturers who have additional specialist higher qualifications
  • On some modules or programmes, if you are employed within Wales you may, by application to both the university and an NHS employer, be given a Welsh Government (WG) funded place. Further details on application.
  • The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing degrees lead to registration on Part III of the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council Register. Successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Community Specialist Practice allows you to record your qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Successful completion of either course allows you to record the V100 Community Nurse Prescribing qualification

You will specialise in your chosen area of district nursing, general practice nursing or children’s community nursing by undertaking both generic professional and specialist modules which include community nurse prescribing.

Throughout the course your competence in practice will be assessed. The course will enable you to enhance your practice skills, leadership skills and professionalism. Students successfully completing this course may record their qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This programme is also offered as a Graduate Diploma for those already holding a bachelor degree.

The course is normally taken on a two year part time basis or on a modular basis over a maximum period of six years.  Both routes require theoretical and practical elements comprising study at Glyndŵr University and supervised practice time in clinical practice with a current sign off mentor. Applicants must hold current registration as a Nurse and educated to at least diploma level. They should either be employed in a community nursing role or be able to secure a placement and be willing to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance .

 Foundations of Community Practice

Students will normally undertake the Foundations of Community Practice module (30 credits) at the start of the modular route.   There may also be a number of places available for this module to be undertaken as an individual module. This may be of particular interest to nurses wishing to expand their understanding of community practice and can be accessed by nurses with less than two years experience. If candidates do not have access to a community placement we may be able to support you in this process.
