About This CourseDue to variation in medical problems and individual needs, learners will be encouraged to work at their own pace with support from qualified swimming instructors. Special lifting equipment and easy entry to the pool is available and swimming aids are provided. Appropriate relaxation, enervation (vigour and tone) and good breathing practices will be developed. The sessions are arranged in timed groups to allow individual access of up to 1 hour in the water. Learners are expected to attend regularly ie at least 80% of the course.
Additional NotesCare support is not available through the college but learners may be supported by their own carers.

Entry CriteriaThis course is for adults (age 19 or over on 1 September 2012) with mild physical disabilities. Potential learners should be recommended by a medical professional (letter or doctor’s certificate) and are encouraged to visit the experienced Gloucestershire College tutors, at Milestone School Pool prior to enrolment to ensure suitability. You are welcome to turn up to a session between 4:00pm-6:30pm or telephone the community admin team on 01242 532050 if you would like us to arrange telephone contact with the tutors. Typically learners will be awaiting for or recovering from surgery, have back or joint problems, be blind or partially sighted, be paraplegic or amputation victims, have muscular sclerosis, haemophilia or cerebral palsy. Both competent swimmers and non-swimmers are welcome.
Progression DetailsLearners are encouraged to develop their swimming in local authority or private pools.
