If you are interested in establishing a career in the field of biotechnology, be it in research or product and technology development, for large global companies or smaller biotech start-up companies, then this may be the course for you. In addition to the development of specialist research skills and technical expertise, you will develop broader transferable scientific skills. You will develop a critical understanding of key concepts in biotechnology including technologies driving discovery, new product innovation and development as well as the business principles underlying commercialisation. The programme comprises core modules of relevance across the biotechnology sector including cell technology, molecular analysis, business and bioethics, in addition to modules of specific relevance to medical/pharmaceutical applications. You will also undertake a Research Project which will enable you to use and further develop technical and professional skills. Where appropriate, you may be given the opportunity to undertake your project in industry or a research institute, thus enhancing the professional experience. This course will advance your knowledge of specialist areas and develop new professional skills to a high level. You will develop a theoretical understanding and an ability to critically evaluate advanced principles of biotechnology. Together with technical and practical skills, these are key to the development of a professional career whether as a research scientist or undertaking a leading role within business in new product development and R&D support management. What's involved The course is studied full-time over one year and is split up into three trimesters. Alternatively it can be studied by individualised part-time study with attendance. You can choose to start this course in either January or September. You'll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and through independent study. There may also be some opportunities to study abroad. You will study modules in: Cell Technology Business & Bioethics Research Skills - Molecular Analysis Molecular Pathogenesis of Microbial Infection Biotechnology & Drug Discovery Option module Independent Research Project

Requirements at a glanceEntry to the courseAn Honours degree (or equivalent) in the bio-molecular sciences, e.g. biotechnology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and biomedical sciences.
