Course outline
1. Introduction to Business
Analysis
Business analysts are at the heart of
successful organizational change. They use a structured set of
practices to understand business needs, recommend value-driven
solutions, and facilitate effective decision-making. In this
course, explore the foundational concepts of business analysis,
including its purpose, core activities, and application across
different business contexts. Learn about the diverse roles business
analysts play, the benefits they bring to project management and
operational efficiency, and the key perspectives from which
analysis can be approached, such as Agile, business intelligence,
IT, business architecture, and process management. This course lays
the groundwork for deeper exploration into the knowledge areas and
core concepts defined by global standards like the BABOK® Guide and
the Business Analysis Standard.
2. BA
Planning and Monitoring
Business analysis
initiatives require careful planning and continuous monitoring to
ensure alignment with stakeholder needs and organizational goals.
Effective planning helps define the right approach, set clear
expectations, and establish processes for collaboration,
governance, and performance measurement. In this course, learn how
to plan and monitor business analysis work by exploring the key
tasks in the Planning and Monitoring knowledge area. Discover how
to select an appropriate approach based on the nature and context
of the change, identify and engage stakeholders, establish
governance protocols, and manage business analysis information.
Finally, gain insights into measuring performance and identifying
improvements to enhance the effectiveness and value of business
analysis activities, governance, and performance measurement.
3.
BA Elicitation and Collaboration
Successful
business analysis depends on the ability to elicit meaningful
information and collaborate effectively with stakeholders. Business
analysts must guide conversations, facilitate mutual understanding,
and ensure that requirements are accurately captured, communicated,
and acted upon. In this course, learn how to plan and conduct
elicitation activities, confirm and communicate the results, and
manage stakeholder collaboration. Explore a range of elicitation
methods – from interviews and workshops to experiments and
observation – and discover how to tailor techniques to meet the
needs of diverse stakeholders. You’ll also examine the importance
of maintaining strong relationships and ensuring stakeholder
engagement to support effective analysis and change.
4. Requirements and Designs
Life Cycle Management
Requirements and
designs evolve throughout the life of a project, and managing them
effectively is critical to delivering successful outcomes. Business
analysts must ensure that all changes are assessed, all
requirements are properly traced and maintained, and stakeholder
consensus is obtained at every step. In this course, explore the
tasks involved in managing the life cycle of requirements and
designs, from tracing and maintaining information to prioritizing,
assessing changes, and gaining approvals. Learn how to apply formal
and informal assessment techniques, manage traceability across
different requirement types, and ensure stakeholder alignment
through effective collaboration and communication. This course
equips you with the tools to ensure that evolving requirements
remain aligned with business goals.
5. BA Strategy Analysis
Strategic
analysis is a cornerstone of business analysis work, providing the
insight needed to define future goals and determine how to achieve
them. Business analysts use this knowledge area to evaluate the
current state, define a desired future state, assess risks, and
develop effective change strategies. In this course, learn how to
conduct strategy analysis by identifying business needs, evaluating
capabilities and constraints, and defining achievable outcomes.
Discover how to assess enterprise readiness, develop transition
strategies, and evaluate potential value to determine whether
proposed solutions are viable. This course emphasizes critical
thinking, collaboration with stakeholders, and balancing benefits,
risks, and organizational context to deliver value-driven
strategies.
6. Requirements Analysis and Design
Definition (RADD)
Turning business needs into
actionable solutions requires a rigorous approach to specifying,
analyzing, and validating requirements. Business analysts must
ensure that requirements and designs are clear, aligned with
business goals, and of sufficient quality to guide successful
implementation. In this course, examine the first three tasks in
the Requirements Analysis and Design Definition (RADD) knowledge
area. Learn how to specify and model requirements using diagrams
and matrices, verify their quality against established standards,
and validate that they support business objectives and deliver
stakeholder value. This course emphasizes collaborative analysis,
structured modeling, and practical techniques for ensuring
requirements are both usable and valuable.
7. Requirements Architecture and Design
Options
In the final stages of Requirements Analysis
and Design Definition, business analysts develop a requirements
architecture, define design options, and evaluate intended value to
recommend the most appropriate solution. These tasks bring clarity,
structure, and strategic alignment to the solution development
process. In this course, learn how to create a cohesive
requirements architecture that connects models, ensures
completeness, and supports stakeholder communication. Explore how
to define and evaluate design options based on validated
requirements and improvement opportunities. Finally, discover how
to assess the potential value of each option to recommend the
solution that best meets business needs and maximizes stakeholder
value.
8. BA Solution Evaluation
Once a solution is
implemented, it must be evaluated to ensure it delivers the
expected value and meets business goals. Business analysts play a
key role in identifying performance issues, assessing limitations,
and recommending actions to enhance the solution’s effectiveness.
In this course, learn how to evaluate solution performance using
qualitative and quantitative measures, analyze data trends, and
identify root causes of performance gaps. Explore how to assess
both solution and enterprise limitations that may impact value
delivery. Finally, discover how to recommend actions –including
potential changes or even solution retirement – to optimize
performance and achieve strategic objectives.
9. BA Analytical Techniques
Business
analysts rely on a wide array of analytical techniques to uncover
insights, evaluate data, define solutions, and support strategic
decisions. Choosing the right technique ensures that analysis is
thorough, data-driven, and aligned with business needs. In this
course, explore essential analytical techniques used in business
analysis, including benchmarking, document and process analysis,
organizational and interface modeling, data flow diagrams, data
mining, and prototyping. Learn how to apply risk and financial
analysis, root cause analysis, SWOT, and decision modeling to
address complex problems and guide well-informed recommendations.
This course equips you with the tools to extract value from data
and apply critical thinking throughout the analysis process.
10. BA
Meetings and Collaborative Activities
Effective
business analysis requires the right activities and tools to gather
information, engage stakeholders, assess performance, and support
sound decisions. From ideation to documentation, the business
analyst selects tools that align with the nature of the work and
the needs of the organization. In this course, learn how to apply a
wide range of business analysis activities and tools, including
brainstorming, mind mapping, interviews, workshops, surveys,
estimation, prioritization, and reviews. Discover how to manage
stakeholder collaboration, assess vendors, maintain backlogs, and
use models such as the business model canvas and balanced
scorecard. This course provides practical guidance to support each
stage of the analysis process with the right tools for the
task.
11.
BA Documentation and Criteria
Documentation
is a vital part of business analysis, helping to ensure clarity,
consistency, and alignment among stakeholders. From business rules
to user stories, effective documentation enables better
communication, solution evaluation, and traceability. In this
course, explore a wide variety of documentation techniques and
criteria used in business analysis. Learn how to develop glossaries
and data dictionaries, model concepts, write business cases, and
capture rules that guide decisions and behavior. Discover how to
document and evaluate requirements through use cases, user stories,
and acceptance criteria, and explore how to analyze nonfunctional
requirements. This course provides the foundation for creating
business analysis documentation that is structured, usable, and
impactful.
12.
Business Analyst Underlying Competencies
Beyond
tools and techniques, business analysts must rely on a strong set
of personal skills to be effective in their work. These underlying
competencies enable analysts to think critically, collaborate with
stakeholders, and communicate clearly across diverse audiences. In
this course, explore the personal skills essential to successful
business analysis, including analytical thinking, systems and
conceptual thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. Learn
how to strengthen interpersonal skills such as teamwork,
facilitation, teaching, leadership, negotiation, and conflict
resolution. The course also highlights communication competencies –
verbal, nonverbal, written, and active listening – that help
analysts build trust and foster understanding in all professional
interactions.
13. BA
Personal and Professional Effectiveness
Professional
effectiveness is a hallmark of successful business analysts. Beyond
analytical and communication skills, analysts must demonstrate
ethical behavior, accountability, adaptability, and a strong
command of business knowledge and tools to support their
organizations effectively. In this course, explore the professional
competencies that underpin effective business analysis. Learn how
to apply ethical decision-making, build trust, manage time, adapt
