All students will take a number of core units. In the first year you will learn about the performing arts industry and attend workshops where you will be encouraged to work across the disciplines of dance, drama and music to create performance material. In the second year you will have the opportunity to work on a major performance project bringing together all the skills you have acquired over the two years as well as studying the context of performance. All students will receive singing lessons and attend classes in movement and musical theatre. As it is vital that people in the Performing Arts can cope with the rigours of a physically demanding job, students also learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Students are encouraged to take a variety of options over the two years in both dance and acting so that they develop a wide skills base. Acting Options Students who take drama options will develop acting skills for auditions, build repertoire and specialise in Classical and Contemporary Theatre. They will take part in a number of public productions (both devised and scripted) in our custom built studio theatre and also on tour. Dance Options For those students who wish to extend their knowledge and improve their skills in dance there are options available in Jazz, Ballet and Contemporary. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop choreographic skills and create both solo and group pieces. Students who take dance options will take part in a number of public productions in our custom built studio theatre as well as in other venues as required.
How you will gain the qualification
Students study at least eighteen units over two years. Each unit is made up of Pass, Merit, and Distinction grading criteria. Students are given a number of practical and academic tasks and then assessed against the grading criteria. After each practical assessment lecturers will give detailed feedback in a variety of ways.
What qualifications you need
4 GCSEs (grades A-C) or equivalent. One of these must be English Language. All applicants will be required to attend an audition day which will include movement and acting workshops together with an individual audition where a solo song and monologue will be required. Mature students are encouraged to apply.
Where to next
Most successful students leaving with their Diploma go on to various forms of Higher Education including University and nationally recognised Dance and Drama Schools. Some have also gone on to work professionally within the Performing Arts industry.
