Full Time

For practical coursework, first year students are expected to produce three linked pieces of coursework, consisting of a pre-production, production and written evaluation. Students will have training in the use of cameras and editing software, and will also have an opportunity to work in the TV studio.

Theory covers the technical aspects of a range of different media industries, as well as the representation of specific social groups in the media. This theory work prepares students for an exam, to be taken at the end of the first year, forming either the complete AS or the first year of the full A-level.

In the second year students will be working towards a practical production based on research into a media industry of their choice. This could take the form of a film trailer, advertising campaign or TV extract.

The theory unit is based on the in-depth study of three media industries, normally the TV industry, the Advertising industry and the Film industry.

KEY SKILLS

The course provides opportunities to develop and accredit Key Skills in Improving Own Learning & Performance and Working with Others Level 3.

How you will gain the qualification

The AS level consists of three pieces of practical coursework, worth 50% of the final marks, and one exam, also worth 50%. Progression to A2 is subject to achieving a good grade in each module at AS.

A2 involves one research and one practical piece worth 50% and one exam, also 50%. The Examination Board is WJEC. In addition, the course includes two accredited BTEC National Diploma Short Course awards.

What qualifications you need

Students need to have gained at least 6 GCSEs, including English Language, at grade C or above. A GCSE in Media Studies is an advantage but not essential, as we offer an induction course to everyone at the beginning of the year.

Where to next

Media Studies does not automatically guarantee a career in the fast developing Media Industry but it is a recognized qualification for many professions. It is best combined with other Arts subjects at A level for entry into Higher Education. There are an increasing number of new courses such as Media and Business, Marketing, Advertising and Broadcast Media at Higher Education. We offer guidance on future choices during the course. Work experience in local media industries is encouraged.
