General information

This course will give you practical, work-related training that focuses on ICT in the business environment and covers e-commerce and business applications. A BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C and is normally taken as a full-time course.

The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners have knowledge of the available job roles involving professional IT and the characteristics employers demand in the IT industry.

Computer Systems.

The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the basic hardware and software components that make up computer systems and for learners to carry out basic installation and configuration.

Setting up an IT Network.

This unit enables learners to understand the role of IT networks in organisations, including their features, services and components and be able to set up a small network for personal of commercial use.

IT Security.

To equip learners with the knowledge and skills to maintain the security of IT systems including the data, network and its environment.

Networking.

Cisco unit - inside the computer.

Teaching and assessment

An overall grade is awarded for the qualifications. Five of the six units are assessed individually by College staff. The Cisco unit is assessed by externally monitored exam.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs A*-D including Maths and English or an appropriate Level 1 qualification (merit or above).

Foundation Learning qualification of at least 26 credits with Functional Skills English at Level 1 and Functional Skills maths and IT at Entry 3/Level 1.

Progression

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT (Networking), a similar level 3 course or employment.
