The programme aims at providing a strong and unique focus on international justice and accountability mechanisms as well as developing critical awareness of, and an ability to employ, competing analytical frameworks within the discourse including law, politics and criminology. A global network of human rights organisations has reached maturity and the protection of right of individuals and protection of vulnerable groups has resulted in the growth of a developing system of international justice, which includes the International Criminal Court, special tribunals, regional courts and truth commissions. More than ever, lawyers are expected to look beyond national jurisdictions and broaden its knowledge of areas including: public international law, international human rights law, international criminal law, asylum, social control and justice, crime, terrorism and the state, globalisation and development, nations and conflict in the international system.

LLM International Justice offers the post-graduate student an opportunity to explore and study established and rapidly developing areas of law by taking both an academic and professional approach to the subject. As such, the programme is intended to cater for a variety of individuals, ranging from recent undergraduates who want to acquire specialist knowledge as part of their legal education, to practicing lawyers and public sector employees who wish to supplement their work with further legal study.

Aims of the programme

  • To enable students to critically understand international justice legal parameters and relevant accountability mechanisms.
  • To contextualise international justice systems within legal, geopolitical and theoretical discourses.
  • To enable graduates to conduct independent research and produce systematic and creative arguments.
  • To produce graduates who will be equipped to work in the field of international justice as advocated, legal officers and advisers, researchers for NGOs as well as governmental agencies, and as academics.

  • Research Methods in Law (15 credits)
  • Foundations for Postgraduate Research (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits)
  • Two options (30 credits) from: International Human Rights Law; International Criminal Law; Human Rights Law; Crime, Terrorism and the State; Politics of Globalisation; Environment, Regulation and Responsibility; Asylum, Social Control and Justice.
