Course summary

Preparing you to become a highly effective teacher, the course has three main elements; the core, the classroom and a specialist theme.

Element one recognises that teachers need an in-depth understanding of the child, detailed knowledge of how schools function and an awareness of the role that teachers play in the wider community. The core modules focus on the learner, the learning community and the wider community. You will develop strategies to enable you to plan and deliver creative and imaginative learning opportunities to enhance children’s skills, knowledge and understanding in all relevant subjects.

Element two is school based. You have a variety of school placements during your course, enabling you to make clear links between the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning in the primary classroom.

Element three offers you the opportunity to study one area of primary education in greater depth. During your first year of study, having gained experience in several subject areas, you choose a specialist theme. The options vary, depending on the campus.
