Course summary

You have seminars each week, studying subjects such as project management, event legislation, marketing and publicity and event resource management.

You are encouraged to attend external events wherever possible, including industry association events and conferences, such as the British Arts Festivals Association annual conference, Association of Festival Organisers Conference and the National Student Events Conference.

By the second year you'll have been involved in a wide range of activities, both within the Institute and externally, putting into practice the skills you learned the previous year. You'll also gain a working appreciation of the practicalities of planning and delivering performances, festivals and events, come to appreciate the political and funding issues that influence the creative sector, and of how to go about getting your career off to a flying start. You will learn the basic skills of arts management in marketing, legislation and human resources issues. And although we don't expect you to be a performer you'll find that there will also be some opportunities over the two years to develop practical performance skills. Case studies

"I have learned a fantastic amount this year and have been able to apply this to the real world."

"This first year has been a huge learning curve and I feel that I have grown in experience, skill, knowledge and confidence. I have also managed to create a very varied CV."

"I may be the next Sharon Osborne—watch this space!"

"My first placement was a marketing internship with Cancer Research UK. After that I worked as an events assistant for the Whitehaven Festival, digital marketing assistant at Lake District Hotels and social media manager at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust". Find out more about Helen Statham's experience of this course.

"I like how hands on we have to be, it is certainly not about sitting in a classroom and learning from a text book. The course is extremely practical based, which I love as I think it is the best way to learn. I also like how the course is linked to professional companies and individuals working in the field right now." Find out more about Anna Parry's experience of this course.
