Description

This course provides suitable qualifications for school leavers interested in a career in any of the uniformed services, eg ambulance, fire, police, armed services. It is also appropriate for adult learners interested in a career in the uniformed services.

The NCFE Foundation Certificate is equivalent to NVQ level 1 (or 2 GCSE grades d to G) and accredited by NCFE.
Units assessed via portfolios of evidence include: Investigating Work Activities; Physical Fitness; Team Work; Personal Health and Well Being; Essential Map Reading and Navigation; Personal Safety and Protection; Competitive Sports; Adventurous Activities

The NCFE Certificate (Preparation for Entry to the Outdoor Industry) gives students the opportunity to experience various aspects of the outdoor industry. It includes the following unit criteria: Identify opportunities for vocational development and employment within the outdoor industry; Develop a personal effectiveness profile and action plan; Participate in the delivery of an outdoor activity session

The First Certificate in Public Services is accredited by Edexcel. Units include: Introduction to the Public Services; Introduction to Public Services Skills; Fitness and Lifestyle for Public Services; Citizenship in the Public Services; The Individual and Society; Security and the Public Services.
You will also study for a Key Skills certificate in IT in year 1.

All students will take physical training to help increase fitness levels to ensure they can pass a Uniformed Services fitness test. This will include running, circuit training and fitness training in a weights room. There will also be many opportunities to participate in team activities.

Visits to Service establishments include: Local Fire, Police, Ambulance Stations; Police Firearms, Wymondham Police HQ; Colchester Garrison (Army); Wayland Prison; RAF Marham; Commando Training Centre Royal Marines; HMS Bristol, Portsmouth; HMS Belfast

All students will periodically take part in overnight exercises at, for example, RAF West Raynham, Thetford Forest, Thorpe Woodland and local areas. This will include the Go Ape High Ropes course.

Other Opportunities include: Adventure training - a week's adventure training is held each year in places such as Wales; Visiting Service speakers; Inter-group competitions; You will also have the opportunity to take the Duke of Edinburgh course.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

No formal qualifications are required for this course. However a good standard of literacy and numeracy, supported by a general education is essential. More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement; this is likely to include experience of paid and/or unpaid employment.

Assessment:

To qualify for the NCFE qualifications you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence for all unit work, which are assessed regularly. To qualify for Edexcel qualifications students need to complete assignments and grades are awared for each unit at pass, merit or distinction.

Progression from this course:

Students who successfully qualify for the NCFE Foundation Certificate will be eligible, subject to interview, to progress onto the First Diploma in Public Services course, or the NCFE Intermediate (Preparation for Entry to the Uniformed Services) course.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. All students are expected to pay an initial £60 start-up fee that covers a course t-shirt, 2 PT shirts and shorts, and a 24 hour outdoor induction visit. Additional costs come from forces visits and adventure training in the region of £200 over the academic year.

Additional Information:

If you are aged 19 or over, you may be eligible to apply to the college's learner support fund for financial support with the costs associated with your studies.
