An explosive growth of leisure, travel and tourism over the past decade has led to an inevitable expansion of the hospitality and tourism industries which has made a significant contribution to national and global economies. This, in turn, has identified the need for well educated and innovative managers. The hospitality and tourism industries have evolved in many ways and are characterised by growth, diversity, vitality and volatility within an ever-changing world.

This course offers you an understanding of the nature of the product itself; an understanding of the political, economic and social context, within which the production and consumption of these products and services take place; an undertanding of the management and organisation involved in the provision and consumption of the hospitlaity and tourism products and services; and a range of specialist applications and skills such as law and understanding of the research process.

In Year One we will anticipate that you will study a range of modules that provide the opportunity to engage in high level food service and preparation skills or practical tourism skills such as tour group leadership. There will also be an introduction to basic management skills.

In Year Two we anticiapte that you will study advanced food service and preparation skills and also you will receive preparation to enter industry for a challenging work placement for up to nine months. This may take place in the UK or overseas.

In Year Three we anticipate that you will study a broad range of management techniques that are contextualised to successful operation of a hospitality or tourism business.

In Year Four we anticipate that you will study strategic issues and contemporary challenges for managers and complete a dissertation in an area of your choice.
Structure:You can opt to study for an Honours degree over four years or an Ordinary degree over three years. You will complete a range of modules, as outlined, each year.

  • Placement: We anticipate that this course will include a placement midway through the second year of studies. This may be either a mix of two short placements or a longer single one for up to nine months. This invaluable work experience can take place either in the UK or overseas.
