Description

Project issues commonly arise from a poor understanding of the ground and how to mitigate the hazards it presents. Those without specialist training in geotechnical engineering do not always have a good understanding of why the ground is variable, leading to hazards being missed or risks not addressed to maximum effect.

This course aims to develop a core understanding of how ground risk can be managed to enhance project delivery, with the focus of each workshop being on interactive learning and discussion.

The workshops will cover the major types and impacts of ground hazard, before looking at how ground risk can be assessed and managed. The importance of desk studies and phased ground investigations in the risk management process will be addressed, and related to a selection of techniques for measuring ground risk. As part of the course, delegates will undertake their own desk study of a site as a collective group, and design ground investigations for different projects for the same site to illustrate how ground risk varies and how its management can be modified to gain maximum return.

The indicative content comprises the following:

  • A brief review on the types of ground hazard and their potential impacts, with case studies used to illustrate the risks they present and how those risks can be managed
  • An overview of how ground risk can be addressed in a phased approach linked to the major stages in project planning and delivery
  • Discussion of the role and scope of desk studies, including useful sources of data and how information from each source may be used
  • Description of the main types of ground investigation, the validity of each technique and how investigations are usually best undertaken in a staged approach
  • Discussion through case studies of how ground investigations can be designed to deliver cost effective benefits
  • An overview of a selection of different methods to record and monitor ground risk, and including a discussion around the skills and interactions needed between the professionals involved

The intended audience for this course are developers, architects, structural and other non-geotechnical engineers wanting to develop their understanding and skills in the effective management of ground risk. It will also appeal to geotechnical engineers early in their careers wanting to contextualise their understanding of ground risk and how it can be managed.

At the end of this course delegates should have developed an understanding of:

  • the hazards that the ground presents
  • approaches to effective ground risk management
  • the role of a desk study in the early identification of ground risk, and how to undertake the ground investigation design to address project risk based on desk study data and the project requirements
  • some techniques available to measure and mitigate ground risk.
