Course focus
The course focuses on developing the knowledge and professional skills required to ensure that construction projects meet their objectives in terms of cost, quality and on-time delivery - with added value in satisfying the design vision.

Modules
For students working in a related role within the construction industry*

Year One

  • Architectural Science and Building Engineering Services (20 credit points)
  • Fundamentals of Construction and Practice (40 credit points)
  • Introduction to Measurement and Cost (20 credit points)
  • Law and Health and Safety (20 credit points)
  • Practice in the Workplace (20 credit points)

Year Two

  • Law and Contemporary Economics (20 credits)
  • Construction Technology (20 credits)
  • Engineering Surveying (20 credits)

Year Three

  • Contract Administration: Control and Finance (20 credits)
  • Construction Management, Practices and Procedures (20 credits)
  • Sustainability Technology with Environmental Control (20 credits)

Year Four

  • Construction Procurement and International Studies (20 credits)
  • Corporate Management (20 credits)

Final year

  • Construction Management Practice (40 credits)
  • Dissertation (40 credits)

*If students are not working in a related role in the construction industry the modules in Year One will be studied over two years, extending the course to six years.

The modules in Year One are shared with BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and BSc Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management. This enables you to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and also have the benefit of flexibility, with the ability to switch to either of the other courses at the start of your second year (subject to your original entry qualifications).

How do you study?
The part-time study route is taught one day a week and, where possible, part-time students are taught alongside full-time students.

This course is modular and teaching is delivered through:

  • lectures
  • tutorials
  • workshops
  • seminar groups
  • site visits
  • laboratory sessions
  • individual and group project.

The delivery of the course is enhanced by:

  • the incorporation of guest lectures delivered by external practitioner experts
  • extensive use of case studies and projects (some set by real companies)
  • field trips.

Course visits and trips
In your second year as part of the Engineering Surveying module, you will have the opportunity take part in a week-long residential field trip.

The trip allows students to put theory in practice, working in small project groups on exercises to develop their professional skills and to broaden their related experiences.

Assessment
You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework, project work, examinations and a final year project.
