This programme is designed to appeal to learners who wish to build on their studies of sport and develop their understanding of the developmental aspects of sport such as fitness, sports coaching, working with children, nutrition and exercise, health and lifestyle. A range of study methods is used including lectures, visits, tutorials, seminars, and practical sessions. Students are encouraged to relate theory to practice at all stages. Students build on their work experience in year two by carrying out a work placement of 10 days duration at an approved sports facility or placement. At least four GCSEs at grade C (including English and Maths) or above or a Level 2 BTEC Diploma (or equivalent) in a related area at Merit level. You will also need to commit to an additional 12 hours of study per week.What does the course involve?
This course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in the sport and recreation industries.The course provides students with the opportunity to choose which pathway would best reflect their career aspirations or higher education progression.
Units to include:
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology; Sports Coaching; Fitness Testing Leadership in Sport; Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise; Training & Fitness for Sport; Sports Nutrition; Sport & Exercise Massage and Sport Psychology.
You can choose to study the Community Sports Leader’s Award and achieve first aid/child protection qualifications alongside this course. Entry onto the supplementary courses will be discussed at interview.
What option will be open to me if I successfully complete the course? This course is intended for those who are in, or plan to enter employment in the sport and recreation industries, or who wish to progress to courses in sport coaching/sport industry-related higher education courses. These courses can lead to careers in teaching, sports coaching, the leisure industry, fitness advice, sports journalism, Local Authority sport and recreation departments, the Armed Forces, the police, sports therapy and sports research. Students can also progress directly onto the degree offered at North Hertfordshire College in Sport Studies.
