Teacher Education

What does the course include?

This course is ideal for you if you intend to teach ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) and/or EFL (English as a Foreign Language) to adults. The scheme is designed for those with little or no previous teaching experience. However, if you are a teacher with existing experience, you will find you gain a great deal from the course in terms of your own development. The course aims to give you a highly practical initial training in teaching English to second language learners.

The course consists of around 120 contact hours to include input, supervised lesson planning, teaching practice and feedback, tutorials, and observation of lessons given by peers and experienced teachers.

You will cover the following areas:

  • Methodology: procedures and techniques for helping learners with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Language analysis and awareness.
  • A total of 6 hours classroom teaching practice (usually nine short lessons) with actual ESOL learners.
  • Observation of experienced teachers working with ESOL classes.
  • Written assignments; four classroom-related assignments of 750 -1000 words focussing on the learner, language, the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), and reflections on classroom teaching.

What do I need to get on this course?

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • CELTA is a level 5 qualification – equivalent to the beginning of the second year on a university first degree course. You must have a good standard of education which would allow entry to higher education.
  • You must have a good command of standard English, both written and spoken, to enable you to complete the course successfully.
  • If you were not educated in an English-speaking environment, you should be able to demonstrate an appropriate competence in English, for example, a pass at Cambridge Proficiency or equivalent.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in two areas:

  • Teaching practice
  • Four written assignments.

You need to develop awareness of learning and teaching issues in teaching practice and develop teaching competence over the period of the course. You will be informed of your progress at tutorials and you will receive oral and written feedback on each of your teaching practice lessons. You will be awarded the Cambridge Certificate when you complete the course successfully.

  • You won’t have a final examination
  • You are assessed continuously and in an integrated way
  • You are expected to attend 100% of the course.

There are three grades of pass on your CELTA certificate:

  • Pass – where you met the overall criteria in teaching practice and the written assignments.
  • Pass B – where in addition you excelled in classroom skill.
  • Pass A – where in addition you excelled in planning, teaching, and awareness of learning/teaching issues.

64 out of the 65 applicants who completed the CELTA course last year were successful.

Where does it lead?

CELTA is recognised by the British Council and in the UK and around the world by employers of English language teachers. It provides you with entry to the profession in teaching ESOL in FE Colleges in the UK, teaching in private language schools, and teaching abroad.

You will probably teach in one or more of three main contexts – voluntary ESOL teaching in the community, ESOL teaching in an FE college, or EFL in the private sector in the UK or abroad.

If you plan to teach in the private sector in the UK or abroad, your next step after about 2 years teaching is to take the Cambridge DELTA, the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults. You may than want to progress to an MA in English Language Teaching or Applied linguistics.

If you plan to teach in ESOL in FE, your next step having secured a post is to take the DTLLS course – the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
