Description

Capital expenditure projects feature constantly in most heavy industries:  oil, gas, mining and utilities.  The materials element is always a major element of the total spend, and can often comprise over 50% of the budget.  And yet it is the element most often overlooked.

Time and again, projects are delayed because of inadequate materials management.

The problem is particularly acute on fast-track projects where design and procurement decisions are made concurrently with construction.

To be effective, materials management needs to be fully integrated into the project plan, from planning and preliminary design, through procurement, vendor control and construction, to final closeout.  Involving professional materials specialists closely and early can bring significant benefits.

This course will help procurement and supply managers make a more comprehensive contribution to the major engineering projects that they are associated with.

We have designed this course for managers in procurement and supply roles who are responsible for liaising with major engineering projects in their company, as well as project managers who rely on the efficiency of their internal supply chain.

It will also benefit managers in other departments associated with major projects and graduate staff or others on career development programmes involving supply or project management.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand how capital expenditure projects are developed, planned and executed
  • Manage the organisational issues that affect procurement and supply performance within a project and the longer-term operational phase
  • Distinguish between day-to-day procurement (for maintenance and operations) and project procurement
  • Advise Project Management on the full range of project-related procurement and logistics matters, from front-end issues to closeout and surplus management
  • Recommend appropriate procurement strategies
  • Use different procurement tools and techniques for different project circumstances
